The iPhone series (from iPhone 4 up to the iPhone 5) is, virtually, a powerful supercomputer in your pocket capable of performing hundreds of different tasks. One of its best features is the powerful camera, producing images to rival some of the best compact cameras on the market. Boasting an updated 8-megapixel lens and a larger 4 inch, 16:9 screen, it is a very capable beast indeed. And as ever, the App Store offers an almost baffling amount of photography applications to make the most of this technology and ensure your pictures are, well, picture perfect! Here’s our guide to five of the best.

Hipstamatic: Hipsta-paks a punch

Bringing an analogue vibe to digital iPhone photographs, Hipstamatic gives the look and feel of vintage shots taken with plastic toy cameras of yesteryear. Keeping the quirks and unpredictability of this medium, it allows you to seamlessly switch between different lenses, flashbulbs and films at the swipe of a finger. Pictures taken with Hipstamatic have their own unique look, characterised by discolourisation, over-saturation, and blurring, which gives a casual beauty and snapshot feel to your output. Costing £1.49, it is supplied with a good selection of lenses, flashes and films to cut your photographic teeth on. More gear can be purchased as “Hipstapaks” from the Appstore from as little as 69p and the standard sharing facilities are present, allowing uploads from within the app straight to your favourite social medium. You can even order “Hipstaprints” straight from the app, delivering real pictures straight to your door!

Photosynth: Panaroma special

An app dedicated to shooting wrap-around panoramic photographs, Photosynth automatically captures and stitches together photos as you pan around your surroundings. A very basic and straightforward app to use, you simply point your iPhone at one side of your chosen scene and move it steadily across, the pictures will be stitched together on the fly. You can make a panorama not only from left to right but also up and down, enabling you to capture a full sphere. Photosynth does an admirable job of piecing things together, but if you do notice any areas of your shot that look out of place it allows you manually re-take portions of your vista, ensuring a smooth finished product. The processing of the final panorama can take up to a minute, but once completed the finished product can be uploaded to the Microsoft site for all the world to see.

Slow Shutter Cam: Worth the exposure

This app is dedicated to long exposure photography, allowing you to capture a range of slow shutter speed effects, usually only possible on much higher priced DSLR cameras. Create waterfall effects, ghost images or suggest movement in your photo by adding a trail or blur. A great advantage this app has over traditional cameras is that you are able to watch a live video preview of your scene as the long exposure picture builds, perfect for directing a sparkler while indulging in some “light graffiti”! It also features a countdown timer, enabling you to be the star of your own shots! Slow Shutter Cam gives you some of the sorely missed features of a DSLR, without the bulk and price tag, all in your pocket.
